4 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Your Next Purchase

By  |

Before your next purchase, be sure to (at the very least) ask yourself four (4) questions. Do not make a purchase unless you can get honest answers to these questions…

Before your next purchase take a moment to ask yourself these four questions.

There is nothing quite like the buzz of buying something. It makes us impulsive, irrational at times, and it can become addictive. But once we have bought the item, we often find it isn’t something we needed as much as we thought we would. It leaves us feeling bad.

We might use it once or twice only to then leave it to gather dust on a shelf or in the closet. So, before you buy something, it makes sense to ask yourself some honest and important questions to protect yourself from being in that situation again.

Here are four (4) questions to ask yourself before you buy your next significant purchase because they could help you avoid that feeling of buyer’s remorse. And make sure you are completely honest with yourself.

4 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE YOUR NEXT PURCHASE

No1: CAN I AFFORD IT?

Before your next purchase take a moment to ask yourself these four questions.

The most important question of all – do I have the money to buy this? Deep down, do I really know this isn’t going to put me in any financial trouble? If ever there was a time to be brutally honest with yourself, it is at this point.

Before you buy a house, you go through an affordability calculator – which helps you work out whether your finances can deal with the purchase of a home. You need to be equally tough on yourself when you buy an item. Weigh everything up and then make a decision. Only you will know, deep down, whether you should go ahead and buy it or not.

No2: IS IT A NEED OR A WANT?

This is another key question. Do you really need it? Or is this just a want? An impulse purchase? Try to get to the root of your motives for wanting to buy this item. Again, be honest with yourself.

Before your next purchase take a moment to ask yourself these four questions.

When WANT and NEED are both LOW – AVOID. When WANT is HIGH and NEED is LOW – PRIORITIZE. When WANT is LOW and NEED is HIGH – Recognize. When WANT and NEED are both HIGH – PURSUE!

Are you trying to impress a friend or a group of people at work? Is it about showing off, or will it genuinely solve a problem in your life and be something you use every day? The ability to order items online and the speed of delivery means it has never been easier to buy what we want. So, it has never been more important to ask yourself why you are buying something before you hit ‘purchase’.

No3: COULD I RENT IT OR BORROW IT?

Before your next purchase take a moment to ask yourself these four questions.

If the answer to the previous question is that you are not sure, then perhaps it makes more sense to borrow it or even rent it for a day or two. Maybe it’s a power tool that you need for a particular job in the house or your garden? And maybe your neighbor or friend has that tool. Do you still really need to buy it if you can borrow it and then hand it back? Good friends and neighbors will often let you borrow it for free and that will also help you with the answer to our first key question – can you afford it?

No4: WILL I NEED TO INSURE IT?

Before every purchase take a moment to ask yourself these four questions.

The final question you need to ask is whether you need to pay to protect the item you are buying. Whatever it may be, make sure you protect your newest asset.

Having your stuff stolen is alarming and stressful, especially if it is something you’ve spent a lot of money on. If you’re going on holiday, it’s especially important to make sure you have a generous luggage and personal effects cover.

So, consider carefully whether you need to add it to an existing policy or start a new one, so you can replace lost items quickly if the worst happens.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Before any significant purchase, take a moment to ask yourself these four questions covered here today. This simple practice can save you loads of money because we’ll often find ourselves WANTING something so badly without really considering if we actually NEED it.

Readers: Do you commonly ask yourself any of these questions before you shop or buy stuff? Do you have any other questions you feel you could add to this list which can help us save more money?
