While we encourage you to grow your beards (if you can), we also understand that not everyone would love to embark on this journey to bearded greatness as a result of genetics, work environment, personal choice, occupation and last but not the least – lack of family support and spousal support.

Do you have Razor burnrazor rash, or any form of skin irritation caused by shaving?

I bet you blame the razor for always being ‘Incompetent’ and ‘useless’ instead of blaming yourself for your lack of knowledge on the right way to shave. 🙂

Shaving doesn’t have to be a disaster, with the right knowledge and skills, you wouldn’t have to struggle with this.

Truth be told, when it comes to shaving you don’t just go with your guts or initiative and expect the shaving god to guide you.

With no firsthand knowledge of shaving, you will or are already making the common shaving mistakes most men are making today.

Please, kindly drop the razor – and stop blaming the innocent, while I give you a run-down of the common shaving mistakes you need to stop making and ways to fix them.

5 Common Shaving Mistakes You Need to Stop Making

#1. You don’t prep properly or neglect to prep.

This is one of the common shaving mistakes many make, shaving roughly while your hairs are too rigid and thick. Before you begin shaving, you need to prep the area.

What do I mean? Well, you need to prepare your hair before shaving.

To prep, shave when you’ve just got out of the shower. First, wash your face with warm water to open pores and soften your stubble. The more the heat, the softer your hair is to cut… please don’t burn yourself. Afterwards, you can apply your shaving cream and shave away easily! Remember to use the right grooming tools

Key point: Don’t wash your face with cold water when prepping, it shrinks your pores which makes it difficult for shaving creams to properly penetrate or razors to cut.

#2. Positioning the blade at a wrong angle.

common shaving mistakes

Positioning the blade at a wrong angle is a safety issue that should be corrected immediately. You could injure yourself because the angle is too steep and if the angle is too shallow, it won’t cut anything. So what is the correct angle to position your blade? The angle is at 30 degrees. Don’t worry you don’t need to have studied Trigonometry in Mathematics to catch this.

How do you do this?

The trick is to hold the razor with your index finger, rest the head of the razor against the skin and then gently and slowly glide it down to 30 degrees until the hair is evenly cut. Maintain a proper direction at all times.

#3. Shaving against the grain.

This is one of the most common mistakes I see many men make. By shaving against the grain, you’ll be begging for undergrown hairs, rash, and irritation. To avoid these, make sure you’re shaving with the grain.

When using a manual blade, follow the direction of growth. How do you do this?

Lightly run your hand over your 5 o’clock shadow from various directions, where you feel less prickliness, shave from that approach.

This way your hair doesn’t get tugged and the razor doesn’t drag against your hair and skin – so it doesn’t cause redness and shaving lumps.

#4. Applying excessive pressure with multiple passes.

common shaving mistakes

Many are guilty of this, you think by applying more pressure and strokes will get the job done without any consequences to your skin. You are only putting yourself at risk by injuring yourself. Your skin is not made of leather, it is very vulnerable to nicks and cuts.

A lot of men make common shaving mistakes like over stroking and putting a lot of pressure over one area especially using a dull or blunt razor – change your blades regularly to avoid cutting yourself.

The question is what is the right amount of pressure and how often do we need to stroke?

The simple rule is to hold the razor against the skin and to glide it along the surface while your hand does all the support. Do not repeat stroking over the same area more than twice and always apply light and short strokes.

#5. Avoiding aftercare.

The last but not the least, another common shaving mistakes most men make is avoiding aftercare. To you, once shaving is done and the beards are gone, you’re good to go… this is not wise.

You’ve just exposed your skin to different bacteria, it’s a one-way ticket to irritation, shaving rashes, and other skin problems.

You should finish up with a shaving balm or moisturizer to rehydrate your skin (please avoid moisturizers that are too greasy).

Aftercare could go a long way in ensuring your shave’s more on point than ouch.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, shaving is so easy. By taking note of these common shaving mistakes and avoiding them, with the right tricks as learned today, you should be shaving like a champ –  it does not have to be a disaster waiting to happen.

Follow the tips and your shaving experience will be more enjoyable.
