INTRODUCTION

The ascot first appeared as an accessory in Eastern Europe in the 17th Century as just long-strip neckcloth men wrapped around their necks for extra style, warmth, and possibly as a functional piece used to hide soil on shirts.

In the 19th century, the modern version of the ascot became an iconic symbol of class amongst the upper-middle-class in Europe. It was usually worn with formal wear such as morning coats, frock coats, etc and till today it remains a feature of morning dress for daytime weddings.

In this day and age, a more casual form of ascot called cravat (sometimes known as a day cravat to distinguish it from the formal ascot – also known as dress cravat) are worn by men as an informal fashion accessory to complement a semi-casual, smart casual and even a sophisticated business casual look (when you do not want to go with a tie).

Tying an ascot is quite simple to achieve. You can do this in a simple knot and wear it similar to a scarf. Just follow the simple steps below:

#1. Like the way you’d tie a tie, make one end slightly longer than the other.

#2. Then cross the longer end over the shorter end, loop it up and over, and adjust the width to how you want it on your neck.

#3. Tuck it inside your shirt, you can loop it again for more density or volume. You can add a pin to the knot if you’re feeling really fancy.

ASCOT GUIDE: TIPS TO KNOW WHEN WEARING AN ASCOT

Today, ascots are a great way to not look sloppy but elegant. You get the attention of people when wearing an ascot and you stand out from the norm. It is also an alternative if you don’t like tight collars, plus it makes your outfit look more dressy and relaxed.

Here are a few tips about wearing an ascot.

  • Unbutton the right number of buttons on your shirt: When wearing an ascot always have the top button unbuttoned – this is a more dressy approach. But if you want a relaxed look, you can unbutton the second button. Overall this comes to your personal preference and the look you are going for, however, do not unbutton more than two buttons as it would look sloppy.
  • Choose the right fabric: When getting an ascot, go for the printed option – paisley pattern or polka dot preferably. Avoid jacquard or woven because your beards (even stubble) could easily pull the threads, and your ascot will be ruined. Go for soft fabric, since it’s right next to your skin, you want to look stylish and comfortable, not stiff and scratchy.
  • Ensure they complement your outfit: Like your pocket square or necktie, your ascot should complement your outfit. For ascots with large patterns, wear solid shirts or a small patterned shirt and a solid jacket. If you wear a solid-colored ascot, wear a patterned jacket or shirt just to create a harmonious outfit.
  • Go bold with the ascot but keep the rest of your outfit simple: When choosing patterns, go bold and colorful, but keep the rest of your look simple. Solid colors complement minimal patterns. And make sure you wear it correctly, wear it low under your shirt so it peeks out slightly.
  • Pair it with other menswear clothing: It is best worn on a jacket or blazers, sweaters, vests, and sometimes with a shirt. TIP: You can wear an ascot to a wedding (as a guest), dinner party, date, and other occasions that call for a semi-casual dress code. But, it is not suitable for your regular office day jobs.
  • Be confident when wearing an ascot: Only wear one if it feels “right” to you. If you’re the least bit self-conscious and nervous, it’s not going to work. Put it on and ride with the flow with confidence. Smile, be relaxed and be the person who’s not afraid to show a little panache by sporting a classic menswear accessory.
